2020 Manteo-Nason

The work of the wine-grower was a constant in a year of turmoil, but the weather during this vintage turned our normally sweltering season on its head. The months of August and September were colder than anything we’ve experienced here in decades. Ripening was very slow, and we were well into October before we could harvest. Perhaps as a consequence of this slow, extended ripening, the wine has a rather extraordinary complexity, evolving for hours after opening a bottle. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, this wine has delicate structure, with fine but persistent tannins and beautiful aromatics. Only 50 cases made.

2019 Manteo-Nason-Tatum

The 2019 vintage was warm and dry, almost arid, yielding a ripe, concentrated harvest. This wine is a blend of 55% Petit Verdot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were sourced from two vineyards on the east side of Mount Alto: the rocky Manteo-Nason soils of Mount Alto Vineyards, and the more clay-blessed Tatum silt loam on the hilltop O’Brien Family Vineyard. The Cabernet provides intense aromatics and fine tannins, while the Petit Verdot brings richness and concentration. This wine is an absolute pleasure to drink now but it has the makings of a wine that will continue to improve with age. 600 bottles produced.
Price: $45 (currently unavailable).

2018 Manteo Nason

We are both gratified and saddened to say the 2018 Mount Alto is sold out! Mailing list members will get advanced purchase opportunities so please sign up if you are interested in future releases.

A red blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon / 9% Petit Verdot. This wine is named after the Manteo and Nason silt loams, two soils that are found on the hill-slopes of Mount Alto. In a rainy vintage like 2018, soils determine red wine quality, and this wine tells us that we are farming a very special piece of the earth. Co-fermented and aged in neutral french oak barrels, yielding a medium bodied, highly aromatic wine that reveals notes of black cherry, anise, cola, fig and dried blackberry leaves. Positively begging to be consumed with a meal. Only 250 bottles produced.
Price: n/a (sold out).
